An Island Destination Wedding That Didn’t Break The Bank
BY MARIANA IN REAL WEDDINGS
With just six months to plan everything from miles away in the U.S., Than and Eloi put together a D.I.Y. destination wedding on the island of Palawan that we’re sure their 40 guests will be talking about for years to come. Sticking to a simple and classic green and white color scheme, the couple maximized the natural beauty of Princesa Garden Island Resort and Spa for both their ceremony and reception. Guests were asked to come in comfortable and relaxed white outfits (like shorts!), which made loads of sense as they even went for a dip in the pool on the morning of the wedding. Everything was as well-planned as it was relaxed, including the fun, D.I.Y. wedding favors that the couple put together: personalized Starbucks cups filled with sample-sized perfumes, socks for the men, makeup for the ladies, breath freshener, and a copy of The Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman. Here’s the best part: This heartfelt and simple wedding cost the couple less than 200,000 Pesos! You have to see how their day unfolded with these shots by Project M Photography!
Puerto Princesa’s top island getaway
Philippine Star
If postcards were still a thing, then Princesa Garden Island Resort and Spa is one you would want to send out. It is nestled between lush palm greenery and oceanfront mangrove that makes you closer to nature during your stay. This island resort located in Puerto Princesa, Palawan is the perfect getaway for your family or friends this holiday season.
Princesa Garden Island Resort and Spa is strategically located near the Puerto Princesa International Airport which is a mere 10-15 minutes away. This breathtaking resort that spans over four hectares is beautifully designed with an Asian themed wooden architecture and has its own sandbar. Upon entering its gates, guests won’t feel intimidated because it doesn’t look like an imposing property. Instead, you will be greeted by three miniature nipa hut like structures that give off an island vibe and you’ll instantly feel you’re entering a safe haven — a refreshing break from the crowded streets of the metro.
Accommodation
It’s no wonder guests won’t let their guard down once thet enter its premises and simply give in to its rich and untouched beautiful surroundings. The accommodation won’t be a problem during peak seasons like Christmas and New Year because this five-star island resort has 78 rooms and villas which are divided into three categories – signature, pool and luxury collection. For starters, they have a room called Princesa Classic which is under the Signature Collection. It can fit two adults and has a balcony overlooking the pool. While at the Pool Collection, they have the Pool Access room which has, as the name suggests, direct access to the pool itself. But if guests want absolute privacy, opt for a Water Villa on stilts which is built directly in front and above the ocean with floor-to-ceiling glass. It is the best choice for couples who want an “island of their own” with 180-degree ocean view.
Dining
Princesa Garden Island Resort and Spa has dining options that don’t just satisfy the palate but also the eyes. For balikbayans who crave for Filipino dishes, the best bet is the Rice Restaurant that has wooden tables, plush sofas, and light bamboo chairs that makes dining a pleasurable and cheerful experience. There’s the Golden Elephant Seafood Village which is a restaurant on stilts that serves fresh seafood dishes and it’s lauded as one of the most photogenic places in the resort. Guests can also have Italian food in the middle of a tropical themed resort at the Tomato and Basil restaurant.
Facilities
Apart from the calming and Insta-worthy backdrops and spots around the resort, another admirable feature about Princesa Garden Island Resort and Spa is their campaign “Green is the way to go” where the property’s management decision always leans towards environmental sustainability. In fact, during its construction, the designers used rocks, corals, old wood and other natural materials found in the area as decorations to minimize carbon footprint. They have their own wastewater-treatment plant and desalination system. Solar panels are used to heat water for its guestrooms. The 1,640 sqm outdoor swimming pool is chlorine-free and uses saltwater instead.
Activities
If their environment-friendly facilities weren’t enough to let you feel closer to nature, then complete your island experience by availing of their All In Package, which includes four days and three nights accommodation with P2,500 worth of food credit for two persons. It is inclusive of an Underground River Tour with buffet lunch, Honda Bay Island Hopping with lunch and dinner, City Tour, and Sandbar Tour. Princesa Garden, Palawan

If you want a short getaway from busy Manila and want some peace and quiet, Princesa Garden Resort is a great option. For people who are always swamped with work but want a quick weekend vacay, this picturesque resort is only 5-10 minutes away from Puerto Princesa airport– meaning you don’t waste any time inside the car traveling from one place to another. Also, the place is huge and they have several restaurants so you literally don’t have to go out anymore. Hope you enjoy these postcards from Princesa Garden.
By the way, I’m also changing my editing style. Let me know what you think!
Princesa Garden Resort, Palawan

Transitioning from one to two children has been bittersweet for me and Patrick. We prayed for a second baby to come our way, so when the confirmation came we were just overwhelmed with joy. Just a few minutes after rejoicing over a positive pregnancy test, I remember being overcome by a wave of emotions…I ended up crying with Patrick because we have become so used to being a family of 3, we cried because our baby boy would no longer be our only baby! So Patrick and I talked about it and we decided to be intentional about our time with our first born so he would be emotionally secure with our love in time for the arrival of his sister. So with the clearance of my doctor (of course), we booked string of weekend trips to really have some quality bonding time with Theo. One of our favourite destinations: PALAWAN!!! Theo is obsessed with Palawan—and who could blame him! Voted numerous times as the most beautiful island in the world, the island of Palawan is a dream!!
Since I was already on my third trimester at the time, I wanted to book a place that would be very accessible and safe for pregnancy travel. And Princesa Garden Island Resort was the perfect fit! We could enjoy the beach without having to travel too far! Just a quick one hour flight and a 15 minute land transfer from the airport and we were in this beautiful resort! This sprawling property is perfect for big families and barkadas as there’s lots of space to roam free! And with well appointed suites that have luxurious bathrooms and beds, delicious food in multiple restaurants, and a very warm and friendly staff—it was really a welcome break for us. You have everything in one resort—so you won’t find the need to step out of the premises anymore. In fact, bitin na bitin pa kami and would have loved to stay longer!
Prices are very reasonable also considering the level of comfort you have in their suites. The pool suites are perfect for families who love to lounge by the pool, while enjoying some brick oven pizza and mango shakes. However, if you’re looking for something more romantic—I highly suggest booking their water villas that give you the best view of the ocean! And each villa comes with its private jacuzzi too. Here are some photos from our baby moon last January! You may book directly via www.princesagardenisland.com.

With 78 rooms and villas, Princesa Garden Island is a large resort catering to guests from all over. It’s also one of the few places in Puerto Princesa City where you can really feel ‘on holiday’. Organic materials, including corals, rocks, and bamboo, as well as Palaweno arts and crafts create a uniquely Filipino feel within the property. An impressive array of activities – from movie nights to standup paddle boarding – makes this resort a great choice for families.

Whenever I need a mini vacation, I can always count on Nicole to be with me. We love exploring new cities because we both believe that traveling is food for the soul. Sometimes though, we also love lazy getaways like staying in a resort during a weekend because it’s very relaxing and it sort of rejuvenates my mind and body (naks). Usually, going to a nice resort eats up half of your day because of the traffic, going to the airport, riding the plane and then another ride going to the resort. That’s not the case with Princesa Garden Island Resort in Puerto Princesa, Palawan because their resort is only five minutes away from the airport! How cool is that right? No time wasted here. Here are some photos from our trip.
Our villa is so huge and beautiful. We even have an outdoor jacuzzi!
I spent most of the time chilling at the pool area because it’s next to Tomato and Basil restaurant and they serve the best margherita pizza. Lol.
What a view.
If you’re craving for thai food, don’t you worry because they have Golden Elephant restaurant. Nicole and I had dinner here twice.
They also have a sandbar and you can choose to walk or ride the boat going there.
The pool area. I really like chilling here.
Their breakfast buffet is located near the lobby and they have so many choices. Of course, I went for the bacon. Because. Bacon. Is. Life.
It’s really so convenient that Princesa Garden Island Resort is just five minutes away from Puerto Princesa’s airport. I wasn’t even done editing a photo when we arrived at the resort- it was that quick. If you want a very peaceful and relaxing getaway, make sure to go here.
Princesa Garden Island Resort is located at Canigiran Street, Brgy. Bancao -Bancao, Puerto Princesa, Palawan. For more information, visit their website and follow them on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

My husband Matt and I are both self-confessed workaholics. Although we try to make time for ourselves and our kids, we still end up spending more time at work and come home feeling burned out. And since we’ve never been to Puerto Princesa, Palawan, it seemed like the ideal destination for us.

At first, Matt wanted a DIY tour, but truthfully we just didn’t have the time to do more work and research. I needed a break from all that! We came across this All inclusive Package Tour from Princesa Garden Island Resort and Spa and decided to give it a go. Day 1
We arrived at Puerto Princesa International Airport at 11 a.m. via Air Asia. Thankfully, our package with Princesa Garden Island Resort and Spa included free airport transfer so we didn’t have to haggle the tricycle drivers.
We arrived at the resort 15 minutes later. We were welcomed with drinks and drum beatings!
Since check-in time was still at 3:00 pm, we decided to give the city tour a go.
Our van brought us to the Immaculate Conception Cathedral, Plaza Cuartel and Baywalk. According to our tour guide, the Plaza Cuartel was the site of a former penal colony, built sometime in the 1940s. If I remember it right, this was where more than 100 soldiers were burned by the Japanese during war time.
After this, we went to Puerto Princesa’s Palawan Rescue and Wildlife Center. . It used to be called the Crocodile Farm, but it’s actually more of a mini zoo featuring other endemic animals.
We also dropped by Binuatan Weaving Creations. It was amazing! We met and talked with the talented weavers, and if only I had the money, I would have probably bought everything there! I couldn’t leave though without getting a couple of lovely placemats and table settings.
Our next stops were Mitra Ranch and Baker’s Hill, both situated along Mitra Road. Mitra Ranch offered spectacular views of Honda Bay.
When we got back to Princesa Garden Island, we check-in and were famishe! The package includes dinner at one of their specialty restaurant, the Tomato and Basil Cucina Italia . We had an amazing dinner there, and in my opinion, they serve one of the best pizzas in Palawan! All their pizzas are wood-fire-baked and made with top quality ingredients. My top pick is their Margherita pizza. I also recommend their hearty pasta dishes!
Day 2
For the second day, we started off with a buffet breakfast. Matt was teasing me that this was the real reason I wanted this tour package. This was quite true, as one of my friends raved about the buffet breakfast here and I wanted to try it myself. And it didn’t disappoint. The spread was a good mix of international and local flavors.
As delicious as our breakfast was, the highlight of our day was touring the Underground River —the famous subterranean river in Palawan that made it to the New 7 Wonders of Nature a few years ago.
When we got to Sabang, we had our complimentary lunch while waiting for our turn to board the boat that will take us to the site where the underground river is located. When we reached the entrance beach, I spotted monkeys and monitor lizards roaming around. It enjoyed being so close to nature, which I had not felt in a very long time! The tour guide told us to secure our belongings, or else the monkeys might actually snatch things from us.
At one point, I think I was in so much awe that Matt had to remind me to close my mouth so I don’t end up finding out what bat poop tastes like.
At dinnertime, the package included another meal at the coffeeshop, Rice, which serves International and Filipino cuisine. Needless to say, we went back to our rooms with very happy tummies.
Day 3
On our third day, we enjoyed another buffet breakfast before heading out for our Honda Bay Island Hopping Tour and Firefly Watching Tour
After 45 minutes, we arrived at the Honda Bay port, which was brimming with people. I could just imagine how stressful it would have been if we took the DIY route. I couldn’t help but give Matt the see-I-told-you-we-made-the-right-decision look.
We waited only a few minutes to hop on our boat and see the majestic islands of Honda Bay. All had stunning white beaches lined with coconut trees. We visited Luli Island (“Luli” stands for lulubog-lilitaw, as the island disappears during high tide and reappears during low tide), Starfish Island, Pandan Island and Cowrie Island.
We went back to the port at around 4 p.m., just in time for our trip to the site of the Firefly Watching Tour. I have to admit that at first, I was reluctant to go on this tour. I was telling Matt that we can probably head back to the resort after the Honda Bay Tour. I’m just so glad that he was able to convince me otherwise. I didn’t expect it to be breathtaking, but it was.
The river tour, which lasted 30 minutes or so, provided an incredible view of fireflies lighting up trees and mangroves along the bank of the river. Every moment was picture-perfect moment! We didn’t take photos though, as the tour guide said the flash would immediately drive away the fireflies. After the tour, we had a simple but satisfying dinner along the river bank.
Day 4
On our last day, after having another filling breakfast, we spent our last hours in the city enjoying the resort facilities. We went for a walk to their sandbar and was at awe with how serene the area was. The waters were crystal clear waters and the sand was powery white! I wanted to take home a starfish from their sandbar but decided against it, knowing this could harm the island’s delicate eco balance. We checked out at 12 noon and headed to the airport, where we talked nonstop about how great our vacation was while waiting for our flight.
I don’t have to elaborate much, but obviously, we had the time of our lives. If you're wondering how much we’ve spent, we paid P16,300 per adult (P6,450 per child) for the all inclusive package which included all meals and tours as mentioned. For us, it was worth every penny for the quality of service and top class amenities we have received. Plus, seeing how family-friendly resort Princesa Garden Island Resort is (they have free art activities for kids and even a huge day care center!), I am sure that we’ll be staying there again when we visit Palawan with the kids!

Where to Stay in Puerto Princesa, Palawan
by solitarywanderer
Our friendly local is back with another post on the lovely capital of Palawan, this time giving her recommendations as to where to stay in Puerto Princesa. Read on and find out which gets my thumbs up!
From luxurious hotels to budget-friendly inns, Puerto Princesa offers an array of accommodations. So whether you’re looking for the best amenities and ambiance, the lowest rates or the most convenient location, you’re sure to find a place that suits your needs.
Where do you start your search? To help you out, here are my top recommendations for your stay at Palawan’s lovely capital. (You can also search for more options via Agoda.)
For tours in and around Puerto Princesa, check out the Palawan tours offered by Klook.
Microtel by Wyndham
I’ve stayed in a couple of Microtel branches (Boracay and Quezon City) and I’ve always enjoyed my stay there. Prices are mid-range, but comfort is topnotch. Beds were firm and pillows were soft, plus they always made sure you were comfortable.
In Puerto Princesa, Microtel is the only beachfront hotel. Located outside the city, in Emerald Beach, they offer wonderful views of the coastline. Should you want to visit the city, they have a shuttle available to guests. You can ask them to arrange an Underground River, too, or any island hopping activity.
To check for promos and other seasonal hotel deals, check out their page: Microtel Puerto Princesa.
Princesa Garden Island Resort and Spa
For those who doesn’t mind spending for complete relaxation, the Princesa Garden Island Resort and Spawould be the best choice.
It has a Hilot Spa Village offering traditional Filipino healing massage, an expansive chlorine-free pool (the biggest in the city, see the first pic!), modern yet cozy accommodations, breathtaking scenery, and lush natural garden setting.
There are also activities like kayaking and non-motorized water sports for adventure junkies — these are free of charge to guests! Within the resort, you can find four restaurants and bars, complimentary day care, kiddie pools, and art activities.
Want to see see something of the city? They also offer tours to historic sites and natural attractions.
Check for promos and other seasonal hotel deals here: Princesa Garden Island Resort and Spa. You can also check their Facebook page.
Balay Inato Pension
Balay Inato Pension (Manalo Extension) is one of the oldest in this list, which just goes to show how popular of a place it is. What has made it such a success over the years—and what makes it stand out today—is its cozy, small town feel. On top of its relaxing and laid-back ambiance, the inn has superbly accommodating staff and offers budget-friendly rates.
According to owner Beth Yayen, it’s very important to maintain good working relations with the staff, to make them feel that they belong to a big family, as this reflects in how the staff treats the guests.
Balay Inato Pension’s flagship restaurant, Haim Chicken Inato, has been a big hit as well. If you’re looking for authentic chicken inato, this is the best place to go to. After all, the whole chicken inato craze started here!
Rooms good for two to three persons start at P1,200, with cable TV, Wifi access, breakfast, free airport and hotel transfer.
Purple Fountain Courtyard Inn
Among the newcomers on the scene, the Purple Fountain Courtyard Inn (Manalo Extension) opened only in 2012 but has already managed to bag the 2014 Travelers’ Choice on TripAdvisor, where it also ranks as the third best bed-and-breakfast in Puerto Princesa.
Many guests rave about the inn’s European countryside design theme, playful and whimsical use of color, unique and chic furniture and paintings, and how it all pleasantly comes together. The rooms happen to be spacious, neat and comfy too, and at only P1,590 good for two people, with breakfast, LCD TV, Wi-Fi access, and free roundtrip airport transfers, it certainly is a winner.
Owner Marlon Ordoñez shares that their family wanted to offer an inn that has “an appeal that transcends different races, age, economic status and so on.” In short, they want something that would be appreciated by people from all walks of life.
The inn also has super friendly and efficient staff . The onsite White Fence Country Café, with its European and Filipino dishes, has been a big plus as well. Oh, and in case you were wondering, yes, there’s a purple fountain in the courtyard that is actually very popular with kids, along with the sanded play area.
Balay Tuko Garden Inn
The Balay Tuko Garden Inn is a bit far from the city center. But guests appreciate that it’s secluded, that it has a quiet and relaxing atmosphere. In fact, the area where it stands used to be a jungle.
The inn’s outdoor landscaping adds a tropical feel to the place, with its lush garden and acacia and tamarind trees. The rooms have a modern and classy touch and are spacious and clean. They do not, however, include a TV (the only TVs are at the lobby area and the seating area by the large indoor pool).
To top it off, the owners are very hands-on, friendly and helpful, as is their staff. Rooms for two start at P2,000 including breakfast.
One Manalo Place
Its avant-garde interiors will catch your eye, but it is the onsite establishments and accessibility of One Manalo Place (Manalo Extension) that have made it a tourist favorite.
Rooms range from P3,200 onwards and have all the convenience of modern hotels in the city, including free breakfast, an ensuite bathroom with toiletries, free use of swimming pool and gym, Wifi access, and an electronic key card system. Welcome drinks and roundtrip airport transfers are provided, too.
This boutique hotel hosts a videoke bar and a gift shop selling imported chocolates, liquor and perfumes along with local souvenirs and delicacies. You can also unwind at the Nuat Thai Foot and Body Massage or dine at Aplaya Seafood Restaurant or Hukad, which specialize in Filipino cuisine, all without stepping out of the hotel grounds.
Should you decide to go out, you can simply walk to the adjacent restaurants, including Captain Ribs, Kinabuchs Grill and Bar, and Ka Lui. Shopping centers are just a 5-minute drive, while the airport is only 2 to 3 minutes away.
Holiday Suites
Besides its friendly and efficient staff, Holiday Suites (National Highway) is best known for its strategic location. The hotel sits right across Robinsons Place Palawan, the first and largest full-service mall in Puerto Princesa. So there’s easy and quick access to a grocery store, a pharmacy, dining outlets and all sorts of shops (and a cinema too, in case you want to cap off your day with a movie).
Holiday Suites is one of the closest hotels to Baker’s Hill and Mitra’s Ranch, while the Honda Bay Wharf is just a 20-minute drive away.
As Anna Aban, property manager, puts it, Holiday Suites is an “art hotel in the city with an enviable location in front of a mall…exuding in great Palaweño hospitality.” Rooms start at P3,300 onwards, with flat-screen TVs, a poolside restaurant and bar, and recreational and sports facilities. Wifi access is also provided.
Where you stay can affect the outcome of your Palawan vacation in more ways than one. So I do hope this list points you to the perfect place for your budget and accommodation needs.

YOUR THOUGHTS MATTER
Exceptional
I have no doubt this resort will be the best in Puerto Princesa when it has completely finished and open. I stayed during the soft opening, which meant only certain areas were open which is a shame bcs I really needed access to a gym while I was here. If the gym was open, it would have been 5stars lol the staff are great! And it’s so close to SM mall and the airport. Tomato and basil restaurant has the BEST food too omg three cheese grilled cheese was amazing.5/5 Excellent
The resort is absolutely gorgeous. I wish we had stayed longer than two nights. The restaurant is Italian (my fav so I was super happy with that) and the cocktails are amazing. I also loved the very friendly staff, and tours are easily booked with the front desk. Only aspects for improvement was the availability of massage through the spa options (it was not available when we requested it) and the live music was a bit too loud so we could not really hear each other at the restaurant and it disturbed us to sleep (it was on until past 10pm). Those two small downsides wouldn’t prevent me from coming back though.Escape to Paradise Garden
We are a family of 9 who booked a stay at Princesa Gardens. This is our second visit to the resort as we have fond memories of our previous stay. We are 7 then, and now we brought along 2 more. What I liked most is the large, clean swimming pool. I Love to swim and so the vastness of the pool is my ‘paradise’. The staff is also very courteous and accommodating. We missed the sandbar and fortunately found a way to re visit it. It was a Joy wading thru it. Then, walking past the mangroves near the resort was also a thrill and a great from the hustle and bustle of Manila. We Will return…,Our lovely Wedding day
We held our ceremony here in their chapel and their reception hall. One stop area for a wedding event! The place is very nice and the staff are helpful. Rooms are huge, good food, superb ambiance. Must try their Tomato and basil restaurant Thank you so much. Best day ever!Excellent stay

Only stayed here for one day and it was great for us. Love the pool view from the balcony. They are still renovating during our stay.
Amazing stay! I will definitely stay here again when I travel to Puerto Princesa again
Only stayed here for one day and it was great for us. Love the pool view from the balcony. They are still renovating during our stay.
hotel is well set out the pool area is beautiful and the attendant/lifeguard (Jayson) was very nice and professional
close to the airport, all the staff were very nice especially the pool attendant/lifeguard (Jayson) who went above and beyond when ever our daughter was in the lovely pool area!
4/5 Good
The place is very nice and on the exotic side Along the bay side The pool is beyond extraordinary The place is very nice and I love coming out of the vehicle and everyone is there to greet you and someone hits a gong upon your arrival The greeting from everyone is warm and sincere as they place their hand on their heart and give a slight bow and greet you I found that very exotic and warm
Excellent Resort Hotel
My fiance and I stayed here for 5 days and nights, and the entire experience was incredible. The facilities, amenities and location are all immaculate, however the service and staff really put this place over the top. I’ve stayed at many tropical resorts throughout the world, and have never encountered a more energetic, helpful staff from the front all the way through the back of the resort. They obviously have a great training program, but I think the this all starts by choosing the best people possible because you just can’t train this level of conscientiousness and service into someone unless they have it to begin with.We have the “Come back, come back syndrome”, and will see you all again soon!
